BRIDPORT & West Dorset Golf Club’s men’s Sunday competition was the Defibrillator Medal and there were some pretty good scores with 14 players carding nett scores under 70 – possibly a club record.

The conditions were very favourable and the cutting back of the deep rough has also been advantageous.

An excellent nett 64 was the best score of the day and this was carded by Phil Lathey in Division Two and also Dave Smith in Division Three.

Six players from Division Three came in with nett scores in the 60s.

Dave Franks topped Division One with a nett 66 and also had a hole-in-one at the sixth.

The best gross score of the day came from Steve Crabb with 75.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Dave Franks (76-10=66), 2 Gary Edwardes (79-11=68), 3 (acb) Steve Crabb (75-6=69).

Division Two: 1 Phil Lathey (80-16=64), 2 (acb) Roy Gill (80-14=66), 3 Martin Horton (79-13=66).

Division Three: 1 Dave Smith (85-21=64), 2 Mike Huxford (89-24=65), 3 (acb) Mannie Wellman (90-22=68).

Lathey and Smith had their handicaps cut by two strokes, Franks, Gill, Horton, Huxford and Wellman by one.

An extra Junior Medal on Saturday was won by Mannie Wellman scoring 89-23=66.

Veterans’ Section

SOME members were involved in a home match in the afternoon against Wareham so Thursday’s competition was a self-entry, single division Stableford.

There were some good scores turned in and of the 39 entrants, 14 players carded scores of 34 points or more.

These scores were surprising because although the weather was fine there was a stiff, north-easterly breeze.

Coming top of the pile by a clear two points was Bob Harding with a fine 40 points.

Next were two players with 38 points with Graham Toop taking the runner-up spot after countback.

RESULTS

1 Bob Harding (17) 40 points, 2 (acb) Graham Toop (23) 38, 3 Dudley Rose (28) 38, 4 Glyn Peach (28) 36, 5 (acb) Chris Roberts (21) 35.

Harding had his handicap reduced by one stroke.

The home match versus Wareham was halved 3-3.

Team captain Dave Rendell thanked Roy Gill who, having just finished playing in the morning competition, stepped in at the last moment to fill in a vacant place in the Bridport team.

Ladies’ Section

BOTH the days this week had either a 125 celebration or weather disruptions, writes Di Neal.

Saturday saw some ladies play in the return Broadchurch match against Clevedon. On Tuesday thunder and lightning cancelled the ladies’ day.

The ex-captains played an enjoyable game and were delighted that Joan Holt who gave the cup many years ago, was able to present it to the winner, last year’s captain Liz Thompson.

The summer pairs was won by Sue Walsh and Julie Oliver who were successful with the last putt on the 18th, runners-up were Pat Baldwin and Marion Hurley.
