BRIDPORT men have lifted the Baker Cup after beating Dorchester.

Brian Iverson, Keith Brooks, Barry Shortland and Brian Conisbee excelled themselves with an impressive 30-16 win to help earn a 70-58 victory to land the silverware in the rearranged showpiece.

Craig Bosher, Mike Smith, Bob Taylor and Brian Rumble had a good competitive game scoring three on the last end to draw 21-21.

Chris Taylor, Ben Jones, Tom Tocher and Chris Thorne, after a slow start, were 17-4 down at the 10th end had a good run in conceding just one shot over the last seven ends to finish 21-19.

A busy week started with a 121-102 defeat for Bridport against tourists Spread Eagles.

Top rink for the hosts was Chris Hall, Michael Hangman, Dave Smith and Paul Table.

Because of the weather, the ladies had to travel to Blandford late in the afternoon to play their deciding Division One game.

Lyn Craddock, Mary Eastman, Laura Taylor and Pat Cornick lost 20-11 with Frances Hewett, Sheila Jones, Alison Tibble and Melodie Watts winning 21-12.

It all depended on Pamela Daters, Gill Hunt, Marion Carter and Rosemary Brooks who had one end to play after the others had finished.

Needing just a draw they were two up going into the last end then with one wood to go they were four down.

It was getting dark as the skip played her last wood, everyone held their breath as it slowly crawled into the middle of the opponent’s bowls and touched the jack – Bridport were the champions.

The Division Two side played their final match against Dorchester in poor weather and only played 15 ends with one player short.

It was a difficult season for them but with several new members getting experience they will do better next year.

Liz Newman, Chris Robbins, Margaret Strange and triumphed Marion Tocher 17-10, while Mary Marsh, Pam Gray, Jean Seadon and Delphine Street lost 21-11 and Janet Bird, Jill Willcox and Jan Tattershall fell 26-7.

President’s Day was a great success with friendly bowling. With more than 40 prizes, the raffle together with donations, was added to the Julia’s House money bringing the total to more than £l,000.

With five out of the six rinks triumphant, the friendly against Heavytree Tourists was won 133-99. By just one shot, the top rink was David Gundry, Geoff Strange, Michael Craddock and Steve Bartlett 25-11.

With the last two matches being cancelled the competitive season ended with finals weekend.
