COLLUMPTON 111 (4pts) lost to Uplyme & LYME REGIS 112-5 (19pts) by five wickets
HAVING been hammered by Collumpton by over 100 runs in the first league game of the season, Uplyme showed how far they had come and why they are now lying second in the C Division League table with a convincing victory over their third place rivals.
Uplyme had the ideal start with Nic Dinnison finding some form and ripping through the top order.
He had overseas player Prince Xavier trapped lbw without scoring and then bowled Jason Parr for four.
Bowling with pace and movement, Dinnison completed a fine opening spell of six overs, three maidens, conceding only seven runs for his two wickets.
Brendon Parr joined Collumpton captain James Blackmore and together the pair dug in and tried to rebuild the innings.
They were making good progress until Steve Batey introduced himself to the attack with immediate success, bowling Blackmore for 25.
In the next over, Parr was run out after a fine piece of fielding from Rhys Davies.
Collumpton failed to recover from this double blow and found runs hard to come by from the accurate bowling of James Whetlor and Batey.
From 88-5 the innings collapsed to 111 all out with two wickets for Whetlor and a further two victims for skipper Batey who finished with fine figures of 3-14 from 5.2 overs.
In reply, Uplyme welcomed back Alex Richards who had been absent due to work commitments.
Together with the obdurate Laurie Thomas he set about knocking off the required runs.
The pair made a steady start until misfortune struck.
Thomas drove a ball from James Blackmore back down the wicket and the bowler stuck out a foot, the ball hit the wicket leaving the unfortunate Richards stranded and run out for 25.
Shortly afterwards Thomas drove again and this time Blackmore clung on to the ball inches above the ground to complete a fine return catch.
The situation deteriorated for Uplyme when the same bowler then trapped the in form Mark Brimcombe lbw for one.
At 39-3, Uplyme were tottering but Mark Batey and Tyler Wellman came together and batted carefully to put together a 60-run partnership although this was not without incident as Wellman was erroneously given out after being adjudged to have hit the ball twice but the umpires rectified their mistake by recalling him to the crease.
Although Uplyme had a scare when losing the wickets of both Batey brothers, Mark for a well made 35 and Steve for one, the result was never in doubt and Wellman (20no) and Michael Van den Berg (8no) were both undefeated when the target was reached.
