Henry Wyrill, 14, has earned himself a spot in the Great Britain Championships in the 50-metre backstroke, becoming the first Bridport Barracuda swimmer to qualify for the event.

Wyrill achieved his qualifying time at the national qualifiers in Plymouth last month under the coaching and guidance of Chris Beale from the South Dorset Tornadoes.

His progress over the last 12 months has seen him chip away at his times for this event – from 292nd to 12th in Great Britain.

He will now compete with 23 other swimmers from around the country at Sheffield Ponds Forge on Tuesday, July 26.

The heats for the event take place in the morning with the final in the afternoon session, if Wyrill qualifies through his heat.

The Bridport Barracuda member trains 11-12 hours a week and has now started further training to improve his strength and power in preparation for the biggest day in his sporting life next month.
