TOP Bridport athletes were in action over the weekend, representing Dorchester Athletics Club at the Dorset County Championships held at Bournemouth.

Most athletes recorded personal bests, some set championship records.

On Saturday, Bronwyn Wright, Olivia Willmore and Maddy Herbert were competing in the under-15 girls’ age group.

Wright finished third in the long jump with a leap of 4.48m just one centimetre off silver, she then took second in the 100m in a personal best time of 13.3 seconds.

Wright threw the javelin 29.80 metres to take silver, she then ran the 300m, as the defending champion and championship record holder she was favourite to take gold again.

She didn’t disappoint, she won gold in a new championship record of 43.8 seconds, Herbert claimed fourth in the same race in a personal best time of 46.5secs.

Tom Crabtree and Harry Tomkins were competing in the under-1717 men’s age group.

Crabtree ran in the 3,000m and smashed his personal best by 16 seconds to finish fourth in 10mins 14secs.

Tomkins competed in his first 400metre race and ran bravely to finish third in 63.6 seconds.

Senior man Ryan Smith came fourth in the hammer with a throw of 30.58 metres, second in the shot with 9.69, he saved his best for the discus which he won with a throw of 35.67 metres.

On Sunday, the same athletes were in action again, Wright and Willmore clashed in the 200m, the question was; who would win?

The 300m champion or the 100m silver medalist?

In the end neither did. Willmore came second in 27.7 seconds and Wright was third in 28.00 seconds, both recording big personal bests.

Willmore also took part the triple jump and bagged gold with a personal best leap of 9.80m.

Herbert ran the 800 metres and finished fourth in two minutes 33.5 seconds, knocking three seconds off her PB.

She also leapt 8.34m for fifth in the triple jump.

Crabtree and Tomkins ran in the 800m, with the firmer coming fourth in two minutes 18.6 seconds and Tomkins was sixth in two minutes 27.6secs.

Joining these athletes on Sunday was Megan Tuck, unbeaten in the hammer and discus at the county championships since 2004.

She defended her discus title taking gold with a throw of 34.56 metres.

In the hammer she captured gold with a throw of 43.65 metres, increasing her own championship record by over a metre.
