PETER Marshall and Andrew Reichter won the men’s foursomes flag competition which was for the Walker Cup.

The duo clinched the event when their final shot went into the hole on the 19th green for a fantastic four-under-par round.

Second was Stuart Gay and Mike Savage (eight inches from the pin on the 18th) and third was Ian Kearley and Dave Boggis (nine feet from the pin on the 18th).

Exceptionally high winds caused the cancellation of the veterans’ competition this week.

However, they had better luck on Friday when they played their autumn meeting with the ladies.

In a very keenly-contested greensomes match the result was very close.

Unfortunately, the ladies, once again, came away with the wooden spoon after winning two of the 10 matches and halved four.

The final result was a 6-4 victory to the men.

On Tuesday, winter swallowed summer in one gulp and left the ladies battling wind and a freak hailstorm to complete a four-ball betterball invitation competition.

Owing to the cancellation of the August meeting there was a slightly reduced field this time around.

The course looked fresher than of late due to heavy rain over the previous two nights which left the bunkers a little tricky and everyone found the going tough.

In spite of the difficulty, the scores were more than respectable and results made for a very close finish, with four pairs returning 35 points.

In the end, it was the pairing of Pat Baldwin and Di Timms that claimed victory on countback from Sue Pollock and Jenny Grinter, who had to settle for second place on the day.
