MORE than 70 men turned out for the Sunday competition, which was the RNLI Medal.

Considering the fair conditions, 16 no-return cards seemed quite a high proportion but maybe the stiffish breeze was sending some drives into the heavy rough.

Once again, junior Kieran Mulhall, in Division One, came in with the lowest gross score giving him the runner-up spot but Nick Franks’ nett 67 made him the clear winner with a three-shot margin.

Equalling Franks’ nett score was David Faithful in Division Three where the top three all carded scores in the 60s.

Roger Galpin was top man in Division Two with a nett score of 69.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Nick Franks (78-11=67), 2 Kieran Mulhall (76-6=70), 3 Barry O’Mahony (81-10=71).

Division Two: 1 Roger Galpin (84-15=69), 2 (acb) Roy Gill (83-13=70) and David Corp (86-16=70).

Division Three: 1 David Faithfull (86-19=67), 2 Tony Burwood (91-23=68), 3 Richard Parry (88-19=69).

Parry had his handicap cut by two shots and Franks, Faithfull and Burwood were cut by one.

Having narrowly lost to Isle of Purbeck GC in the semi-finals of the Carpet Barn Fifty Plus Knockout Cup competition, Bridport were invited to the finals day held at Canford Magna GC to compete for the Brian Brady Trophy.

This match for losing semi-finalists was against Came Down B and Bridport won 3.5-1.5.

Following an excellent dinner, Bridport were presented with the trophy and prizes by the competition sponsor.

Isle of Purbeck GC beat Romsey GC 3-2 in the main final.

In the midweek Stableford, the three leaders, Larwence Turner (21), Mike Halford (26) and Dave Howat (15) all carded 35 points and, after countback, finished in that order.

Veterans’ Section

THE Thursday competition was a drawn Stableford incorporating the over-70s’ cup, which was donated by Keith Mundy of Eype House Caravan Park.

Fifty-three members entered on a dry but cloudy morning with an increasing brisk breeze.

The under-70s produced the higher scores on the day, led by Richard Parry with a score of 42 points.

However, they were too young to compete for the major trophy and the Septuagenarian Cup was won by Trevor Foster after countback from Mike Stockton with a score of 39 points.

Foster also qualified for the Octogenarian Cup, which he won a few weeks ago.

RESULTS

Under-70 winners: 1 Richard Parry (20) 42pts, 2 Bob Harding (16) 41pts, 3 Jon Winkle (24) 40pts, 4 Tony Burwood (23) 37pts.

Over-70 winners: 1 (acb) Trevor Foster (25) 39pts, 2 Mike Stockton (25) 39pts, 3 Peter Davies (19) 37, 4 Alan Harvey (17) 36pts.

Harding had a two-shot handicap cut and Foster, Parry and Winkle a one-shot cut.

Bridport lost Tuesday’s away match 4-2 to Sherborne.

Ladies’ Section

THIS week, 22 members played a drawn greensomes.

The competition was played in bright sunshine and with very little wind. The firm fairways allowed balls to run well and scores were good.

The winners, with 41 points, were Sue Winkle and Heather Chapman.

Runners-up were Liz Walker and Sue Kelson with 37 points on countback from Rosemary Shepherd and Jane Dowling.

Lyme Regis Golf Club Senior Section

THE Seniors had a particularly good week, and played two friendly contests against other clubs.

Lyme had a resounding win, four games to two against Dorset Golf and Country Club, which was followed up by a closer match, beating Exeter Golf Club by four and a half games to three and a half.

This week also saw the inaugural competition in memory of the late Max Thorner.

The roll up that he ran invited guests to play alongside them in a shot-gun start, where more than 80 golfers took part.

The winning pair of Alan Woodbridge and Neil Thomas were presented with the trophy at the meal that followed.
