BRIDPORT & West Dorset Golf Club’s ladies’ captain Liz Walker delighted members with a hole-in-one on the sixth during a Texas Scramble, when club officials led teams of new members in a nine-hole competition.

The ladies’ teams also had two successes in matches against local rivals Lyme Regis this week.

The first was a 2-1 success away from home in the Parkin Cup, a county competition.

Meanwhile, the home match in the Beales Trophy resulted in a 4-3 win.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the club hosted the Dorset Ladies’ County Golf Association spring meeting for bronze division players.

The weather was disappointing, with rain on both days, but the ladies enjoyed the course and the occasion.

Home players were in the prizes on Tuesday, Sally Woolmington (nett 77) and Sue Winkle (nett 78) finishing third and fourth in the Sime Salver.

On Wednesday, and in continuous rain, Pat Baldwin claimed the De Gruchy Salver with 25 points and was the only lady to record a two that day.

The Saturday Cup was played in the worst of the weather with both wind and heavy rain sweeping the course.

Only seven of the 12 starters completed their rounds and low scores were a clear indication of the very difficult conditions through which the ladies had to battle.

The cup was won by Di Loving with just 26 points and the runner-up was Carole Brown on 25.

Men’s Section

BRIDPORT’S men enjoyed fine weather for their June medal on Sunday, as 76 players made up the field with heavy rough punishing those who strayed off the fairways, writes Peter Crowter.

Fourteen entrants failed to finish but there could not have been a closer finale in division one, both in gross and nett scores.

The three best nett scores were all 71, with Matt Gale emerging as the winner after countback.

The best nett scores of the day came in division two where Ian Thacker and Doug Miners were the only two players on the day to card sub-70 scores.

Thacker was the lowest scorer with a fine nett 67. Nathan Dunford topped division three with a nett 72.

Gavin Gay, Thacker and Miners received a one-shot cut to their handicap.

On a murky morning with rain not far away, 45 entrants entered the the veterans’ Thursday competition, a single-division self-entry Stab-leford.

Some veterans were involved in an inter-club match versus Charminster and so were unable to take part.

Scores were very close at the top with only one point separating the first four places.

The winner was veterans’ stalwart Ian Campbell, who with 37 points nudged Bryan Holmes into the runners-up spot after countback.

In the rain-curtailed match at home against Charminster, Bridport were well ahead when it was called off.

Both captains agreed on a 4-2 result in favour of the home team.
