THE highlight of this year’s Easter weekend at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club was the Directors Cup, writes Peter Crowter.

The competition was open to all playing members regardless of gender or age and the total score over two rounds qualified. Some 180 players teed off over the weekend, the most popular day being Good Friday when 67 players took to the course in the lovely weather.

Sunday was something of a washout when only four of the 23 starters completed their rounds.

The two best single-round scores were 62, by runner-up Tom Hunt, and 63, carded by winner Chris Bodycombe.

RESULT

1 Chris Bodycombe (20) 63+72=135, 2 Tom Hunt (22) 74+62=136, =3 Steve Hynes (19) 69+69=138 and Geoff Hunt (27) 66+72=138.

Bodycombe and Hunt both received a two-shot handicap cut.

Veterans’ Section

THERE were 59 starters for the Thursday competition, the Bill Caddy Putter, a medal off the white tees.

It was played on a fine spring morning with only a light breeze, so it was perhaps surprising that as many as 11 no-result cards were handed in.

At the other end of the scale, one card came in with the lowest nett score seen in the veterans’ section for some considerable time.

Top of Division One, and winner of the Bill Caddy Putter, was Ed Hanson who carded an amazing nett 62, earning him a three-shot handicap cut.

Runner-up with a score, that on most occasions would have been a winning one, was Terry Kearley with a nett 66. That meant a two-shot handicap cut for him.

Chris Roberts’ nett score of 69 saw him top Division Two.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Ed Hanson (82-20-62), 2 Terry Kearley (86-20-66), 3 Dave Boggis (87-19-68), 4 P J Huggins (88-19-69).

Division Two: 1 Chris Roberts (90-21-69), 2 Crispin Boyle (99-28-71), 3 Dave Cole (98-25-73), 4 (acb) Jim Adams (96-22-74).

Ladies’ Section

THE highlight of a busy week was a magnificent hole-in-one on the course’s signature sixth hole by Marilyn Wilson during the RNLI Stableford, writes Rosemary Shepherd.

The excited cheers of her playing group on the cliff top were heard across the course.

The occasion was made even more special because Grace Clothier, who donated the Hole-in-one Trophy back in 1997, was in the clubhouse having lunch with friends.

Clothier presented the trophy to Wilson and she recounted the tale of her ace.

The competition was played by 35 ladies, with Sally Woolmington coming out on top and scoring a total of 36 points.

She received a trophy and prize presented by the RNLI.

Ruth Donovan, with 34 points, was the runner-up on countback from Wilson and Liz Walker.

Entry fee donations totalled £85 for the RNLI in addition to the money raised by a raffle.

Also in the past week, the Inter-club team played out a tough home match against the ladies of Came Down, which ended in a 3½-3½ draw.

On Saturday, 13 mixed pairs played the qualifying round of the Christine Clay Cup. The top eight will go on to play a knockout competition.

In-form Wilson and partner Geoff Hunt were the top scorers with a nett 71.

In second place was Roy and Viv Gill with a nett 74.

The Mail on Sunday team won their third round match against the ladies of Tiverton 3&2.
