YOUTH members were honoured at Lyme Regis Sailing Club’s annual prize-giving.

Youngsters and their families crowded into a well-supported event at their clubhouse, held as usual before the town fireworks and bonfire and followed by a pizza supper.

Introductions and commentary on the awards were made by honorary secretary Sally Holman, co-ordinator of the Tuesday programme for beginners and improvers, and trophies were presented by commodore and RYA race coach, Jerry Rook, who runs the Saturday race group.

The presentation included sharing successes of this season and offered opportunities for progression to those keen to continue their sailing.

The club owns two Lasers in race condition, which are loaned to promising young sailors who have shown commitment, on an annual basis.

The commodore and harbourmaster selected Lily Helston and Daniel Lloyd Davis as ‘owners’ for the coming year.

From the Tuesday group, Katie Frost, Natasha Dower, Tom McDonald, Sam Norton, Hugo Whittome and Jack Young gained awards to accompany their RYA Level 1 or Level 2 certificates.

Race group award-winners included Jonny Lloyd Davis (personal improvement), Cam-eron Moss - the top junior helm in the club regatta (Junior Challenge Cup) and best results with consistent participation in club racing throughout the season (Youth Achievement Cup), and Jake Stowe (the coveted Seaman-ship Trophy).

Stowe has raced regularly as well as volunteering to learn race management at club events and is now a youth rep on the main committee.

In the spirit of good sportsmanship, Moss accepted the wooden spoon. Those who took part in Bart’s Bash, the world-wide sailing race in support of the charity for helping young people learn to sail set up by the late Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, received a certificate from the commodore.

Youth sailor Findlay Fuller made a video of the race group, which was shown after the prize giving.

Holman thanked the volunteer teams, Chris Joyner and the LR Sea School for the use of the dinghies.

Tuesday training is offering up to six places for beginners next season, (you must be 10-years-old on April 1, 2015 and member of LRSC Ltd), existing participants have first option on second or third year places.
