LYME Regis will host the Arsenal Charity XI as part of the club’s Family Fun Day at Davey Fort on Sunday, August 24.

The Gunners’ team raises money for the Arsenal Foundation and a third of all the funds the Seasiders accumulate on the day will go their way.

Former Arsenal player Brian Hornsby manages the Londoners, who are typically made up of ex-Gunners and celebrity fans.

They will play a Lyme Regis Select XI to be captained by Arsenal fanatic Simon Flux – the Lyme side has to include five players over the age of 40.

The event, organised and hosted by the Seasiders Ex-Players’ Association, gets underway the night before when the Arsenal players will meet the public in the Lyme clubhouse.

The action on the Sunday starts at 10.30am with entertainment, a barbecue and penalty shoot-out, and the charity fixture kicks-off at 1pm.

Admission on the day is just £3 for adults and £1 for children.

And the Seasiders are also offering hospitality for the event costing £150 for a table of six.

That price includes a three-course meal with wine, a cream tea, signed matchday programme and a chance to pick the man of the match.

Securing the match against the Arsenal Charity XI was down to Lyme club president Philip Evans.

“Many years ago the company I worked for published the Arsenal club magazine,” he said.

“I happened to see one of the guys I knew and he told me about the Arsenal Charity XI.

“I thought it would be good if we could get them to Lyme Regis so I got in touch and it went from there.

“The team is made up of ex-Arsenal players and celebrities who are Arsenal fans, and they have a foundation which they raise money for.

“Brian Hornsby is in charge of the team and he has got connections with this area as he married a Beaminster girl.

“We’re hoping to contribute a significant amount to the Arsenal Foundation and raise some money for our club.”

Evans is hoping that around 1,000 people will turn up for the special day, which runs until 7.30pm.
