LYME Regis cannot afford any more slip-ups in their remaining seven games if they want to clinch a league and cup double this season, according to boss Tim Edwards.

Maximum points from the fixtures they have left would see the Seasiders crowned Perry Street League Premier Division champions no matter what any of their rivals do.

Draws at Millwey Rise and Beaminster had seemed to derail Lyme’s title push but, in Ed-wards’ opinion, the 7-1 thrashing of Misterton and Dorset Inter-mediate Cup final victory against Allendale gave his players the confidence boost they needed.

They now face seven matches in 15 days and, with leaders Crewkerne Town favourites to win their last two games, error-free football is required if Lyme are to snatch the league trophy.

“The Misterton win and the cup final came at just the right time for us because it had looked like the league was going to get away from us after those two draws,” said Edwards.

“But winning the cup gave the lads’ confidence a boost. They realised what it was like to lift a trophy and now they have a chance to win an even bigger one.

“We know we’ve got to win every game now and once we lose then that’s pretty much it, providing Crewkerne win their two games, which they probably will.

“But we’ve got more of a chance now than I thought we had after those two draws against Millwey Rise and Beaminster.

“Most people wrote us off a couple of weeks ago so that probably helped us as well.”

Lyme face away games against West & Middle Chinnock this evening (6.15pm), Perry Street on Saturday (2.30pm) and Shepton Beauchamp next Tuesday (6.15pm).

They go into those fixtures on the back of a 4-2 triumph at Ilminster Reserves on Tuesday.

After trailing 1-0 at half-time, the Seasiders fought back with doubles from Joe Bond and Richie Emmett to move to with-in 14 points of Crewkerne with five games in hand.

Skipper Matt Laing missed the trip to Ilminster but is back for tonight’s test, just in time to boost a defence that, due to injuries, featured one recognised defender on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Lyme Regis Reser-ves were beaten 1-0 by Perry Street Reserves in the Division One Cup final on Monday.

However, after last night’s game at Pymore, second-placed Lyme go up against Division One leaders South Petherton at Davey Fort on Saturday (2.30pm).
