LYME REGIS 3 FARWAY UNITED 0

LYME Regis strolled into the last four of the Challenge Cup at the expense of Farway United.

The reigning Perry Street Premier Division champions controlled the game from start to finish and even threw in a remarkable piece of sportsmanship in their first outing at Davey Fort for three months.

Lyme boss Karl Diment said: “Will Mowbray gave us the lead after just 45 seconds and then 15 minutes later Mark Bailey put us two up.

“Mark, Adam Caddy and Will then all went close to putting us further ahead before Steve Batey grabbed the third with a header in the second half.

“To be honest our keeper never really had a save to make and we controlled it throughout.

“It was our first game at home for a very long time and it was just nice to get the win.

“The pitch was still pretty heavy but we dealt with the conditions well and can now look forward to the semi-finals.”

Mowbray almost had a brace but the effort was chalked off despite the referee having initially awarded the goal.

Diment explained: “His shot went through the side-netting but the referee didn’t see it and neither did their keeper who had dived across to try and stop it.

“The goal was given but one of our players went across and explained what happened and eventually it was erased.

“Some teams may have tried to get away with it but no one wants to win like that.

“We also could have had a penalty when Dan Rudge was brought down but it wasn’t given.

“It was a dead cert spot-kick but I think the referee might have still been a bit flustered by what had happened before.”

Next up for Lyme is a home clash against Combe Reserves in the league on Saturday (2.30pm).

Diment, whose men currently lie third, added: “We desperately need the three points but we won’t be taking them lightly.

“They beat us 2-0 in the league earlier in the season so we are expecting another very tough game.”
