PATRICK Woolmington was crowned men’s champion at this year’s Club Championship.
The first round of 18 holes was played on Saturday with the second round of 18 holes taking place the following day.
At stake was not only the right to be recognised as the 2012 club champion but also the Scratch Cup for lowest gross score, the Fraser Mercer Cup for the lowest gross score (14 handicap or over) and the Peter Ridler Cup for the lowest nett score.
Woolmington celebrated his title victory by also lifting the Scratch Cup.
He also finished as runner-up in the Peter Ridler Cup to Doug Miners, who completed a double by winning the Fraser Mercer Cup.
RESULT 2012 Men's Club Champion: Patrick Woolmington.
Scratch Cup: 1 Patrick Woolmington (3) 74+74 = 148 gross, 2 Ed Cary (5) 79+80 = 159, 3 Graham Blunden (7) 84+76 = 160.
Fraser Mercer Cup: 1 Doug Miners (18) 84+92 = 176 gross, 2 Nick Urch (15) 95+82 = 177, 3 Toby Eeles (14) 85+94 = 179.
Peter Ridler Cup: 1 Doug Miners (18) 66+74 = 140 nett, 2 Patrick Woolmington (3) 71+71 = 142 (acb), 3 Dave Allen (10) 71+71 = 142 (acb) * The veterans’ competition was a Bogey for the Gutty Trophy, writes Peter Crowter.
A few years ago the late Bunny Snellock found a gutta percha ball nestling in the stone wall that crosses the 12th fairway.
The ‘Gutty’ as it was called, was replaced by the modern type ball in 1901.
Bridport & West Dorset, formed in 1891, started out on the west cliff and did not move to where they are now until 1911, so why anyone was using an old ball at least 10 years later is a bit of a mystery.
Bunny though had his interesting find mounted as a trophy and presented it to the club, and last Thursday a host of veterans got extremely wet trying to win it.
Vice-captain Roger Pollock topped Division One with a +3 score but the trophy winner with +4 was Alex Millar from Division Two.
RESULT Division One: 1 Roger Pollock +3, 2 Marcus Beresford +2, 3 (acb) John Sansom +1, 4 Tim Bassett +1.
Division Two: 1 Alex Millar +4, 2 Keith Delves +1, 3 (acb) Mike Conway 0, 4 Dave Northover 0.
* A home match versus Ashley Wood resulted in a 3½-2½ win for Bridport.
However, they lost their away match at Wareham 5-1, despite a hole-in-one on a 190-yard par three from Ian Wigglesworth.
* On a beautiful day, the ladies’ Beales team played Sherborne on their own patch and won 4-3, writes Lyn Hargrave.
All the matches were close and those that lost went down fighting.
Meanwhile, 16 teams of three ladies played a Texas Scramble with Carole Brown, Joan Brake and Di Stothard (nett 76) winning ahead of Jean Stephens, Sue Winkle and Jan Clark (nett 79).
