THE veterans headed off to Honiton Golf Club for their annual away day organised by Fran Eamer, last year’s winner of the event.

The 31 players set off in the rain but on arriving at Honiton this cleared, leaving in its wake foggy conditions that lasted all day.

Visibility was sometimes down to 50 metres so where to hit the ball was often pure guesswork.

Owing to the conditions, most of the scoring in this Stableford competition was far from spectacular so the leaders can be justifiably pleased with their respectable scores.

Ron Hobson was runner-up with 37 points but earning himself the honour of once again organising next year’s event was Eamer with 38.

RESULTS 1 Fran Eamer 38pts, 2 Ron Hobson 37pts, 3 Dave Boggis 36pts, 4 Alan Harvey 34pts.

Winning team: Dave Dowling, Dave Buckland & Terry Garrett 94pts.

Nearest the pin: Dave Buckland.

o o o ON Thursday some of the vets were involved with another inter-club match so the competition was a single division self-entry Stableford.

It was not a very pleasant morning with drizzle at times and a strong gusty wind. There were some surprisingly good and consistent scoring at the top of the pile with three 38s and two 37s, but way out in front by a clear three points was Alan Harvey with 41.

RESULTS 1 Alan Harvey (18) 41pts, 2 (On countback) Gerald Allum (19) 38pts, 3 (On countback) Tim Bassett (24) 38pts, 4 Jeff Webster (26) 38pts, 5 (On countback) Dave Buckland (20) 37pts, 6 Mick Kelson (24) 37pts.

The home match with Windwhistle was halved 3-3.

o o o THE men’s Sunday competition was the April Medal incorporating the David Streeter Mashie Niblick.

There was a large entry of 83 players on a morning where conditions were ideal for golf, and this was reflected in the high scores across all divisions, with 13 men carding nett scores in the 60s.

In addition, eight players earned themselves a handicap reduction.

The leading scores were all close and many had to be decided on countback, but out on his own was club vice-captain Peter Marshall with a winning score of 66, which also earned him the David Streeter Trophy.

RESULTS Division One: 1 Peter Marshall 75-9-66 (lowest gross), 2 (After countback) Julian Green 76-8-68, 3 (acb) Gary Edwardes 77-9-68.

Division Two: 1 Ian Thacker 83-16-67, 2 (acb) Simon Beal 84-15-69, 3 (acb) Mike Thompson 82-13-69 (lg).

Division Three: 1 (acb) Fred Gibbs 93-25-68 (lg), 2 (acb) Bob Dewland 94-26-68, 3 Steve Edgar 97-28-69.

Marshall, Thacker, Beal, Dewland and Edgar all received a one-shot handicap reduction.

o o o IN the opening match of the Hardy B League, Bridport got off to a flying start with a 5-0 win in their home clash with Queen’s Park.

Captain Ian Thacker was delighted, and is confident of great things this year.

o o o ONCE again the English climate ‘did’ for the ladies, writes Lyn Hargrave.

What should have been a riot of colour became a misty haze of dark blue and black as wet gear was donned covering the teams’ colours representing the lady captain, treasurer and handicap secretary.

Through the morning, the gods relented but not soon enough to reveal the splendour of red, blue and green.

Playing a Stableford, the treasurer’s blue team came first with 293 points.

Second went to the handicap secretary’s green team on 271 points while 12 behind were the lady captain’s red members in third (259).

Meanwhile, in near perfect conditions, the ladies played the third round of the Mail on Sunday Knockout Competition at home against Sidmouth (Devon).

And they booked their spot in the next stage with an impressive win of 3½-1½.
