UPLYME & LYME REGIS 63 (5pts) lost to SANDFORD SECONDS 205-8 (20pts)

UPLYME & Lyme Regis remain rooted bottom of the table after suffering a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Sandford Seconds in D Division East of the Devon League.

The home side won the toss and elected to field first but came up against a strong batting performance from Sandford.

It was not until Sandford had 61 runs on the board that Uplyme were able to strike, when Shaun Hawkins was caught for 35 by Mark Brimicombe.

Steve Batey’s bowling helped get a quickfire double for Uplyme, taking Josh Misselbrook and Christopher Blake’s wicket, who put in a strong effort at the crease as he struck 75 before being caught by Brian Rattenbury in the space of three runs.

A late 21 from Robert Stoyle helped boost Sandford to 205 after 45 overs, setting a good bar for Uplyme to reach.

Uplyme’s batting started disastrously with four batsmen went with the home side having put just 11 on the scoreboard.

Jed Whittington, Brimicombe and Batey were bowled out by Josh Fryett, while Niall Waterhouse was caught by Shaun Hawkins.

A late stand by Robert Thom helped reduce the margin slightly with 21, before Fryett bowled him.

Uplyme’s efforts were finally snuffed out when Neil Price was trapped lbw as the home side were stopped on 63.

Club secretary Derek Wellman said: “It was a bit disappointing because obviously we lost quite heavily.

“Everybody gave 100 per cent We obviously did not bat very well, at one stage we were 14-7.

“They had two good opening bowlers that bowled well and did the damage.

“Rob Thom came in and batted well and got it up to a more respectable 63, it was not a bad effort but obviously the damage was done then.

When asked what he would put the batting down to Wellman said: “Just lack of practice really.

“A few second-team players were in the team as well, everyone has got to knuckle down with it now and get back to a bit more practice and hopefully it will all click together.

Uplyme will be boosted at the weekend when more first-team players are able to return to the fold, with captain Laurie Thomas among those to return.

Uplyme travel away to Heathcoat Seconds on Saturday.
