LYME REGIS 1

UNI OF EXETER SECONDS 1

LYME Regis missed the chance to retain their hopes of finishing second in the Devon & Exeter League Division One as they drew 1-1 with University of Exeter Seconds at Davey Fort.

Gary Knight had given the Seasiders a 1-0 lead and for much of the game Mark Bailey’s men looked likely to hold on to a win that would have left them needing a victory against Wellington Reserves on Saturday (2pm) to snatch second from the student team.

But Bailey’s troops were dealt a crushing blow on 88 minutes when substitute Tyler Cooke popped up to level the scores and secure second place overall for his side.

The result now leaves Lyme Regis in danger of dropping into fourth, although their fate in is their own hands, with the Seasiders knowing three points against Wellington will seal their third-place spot.

Perry Street & Yonder Hill provide the danger to Lyme’s top-three aspirations, with the Per enjoying a nine-goal difference with two games remaining, just three points behind Bailey’s side.

Lyme Regis’ attentions will now turn to their final league clash with Wellington at Davey Fort.

The Seasiders could potentially have two games after that with a Grandisson Cup semi-final fixture against Tipton St John at Ottery St Mary next Tuesday night (7pm) still to play.

The semi-final winners will contest the final, due to be held at Ottery St Mary, on Wednesday, May 30 (7pm).
