PORTLAND UNITED RESERVES 2

Evans 10, Camp 30

LYME REGIS 0

LYME Regis were knocked out of the Dorset Senior Trophy at the third-round stage after their depleted side was beat 2-0 away at Portland United Reserves.

Goals from Shane Evans and Josh Camp in the 10th and 30th minutes sealed the defeat, despite an improved performance from the away side in the second half.

Lyme had eight players missing due to injuries and the side was a mix of first team, reserve and third team players.

Lyme Regis manager Robin Townsend said: "I’m a little bit disappointed, but I’m pretty proud of the guys that have stepped in and have done a great job for us.”

The first goal came after a break as Shane Evans picked the ball up on the edge of the box in the tenth minute and Garry Knight blocked the ball with his knee which sent the ball into the net.

The home side extended their lead on the half an hour mark through Josh Camp.

Lyme Regis did their best to get back into the match as Julian Simier had a header from eight yards which provoked Ash Owens in the Portland goal into a superb save.

There were some chances for the Seasiders from corners and a free kick from Rob Fellingham was hit straight at the wall as the first half came to an end.

Portland were quiet in attack in the second half as the Lyme Regis defence held firm while they searched for a way back into the game as Lyme had a penalty shout turned down.

The Seasiders went close when Chris Herbst was unsuccessful with a curling shot, while Simier saw a good chance come and go as the match ended 2-0 to Portland.

Townsend said: “I thought in the second half we took control of the game but unfortunately we couldn’t put the ball in the net.”

“We didn’t play very well the first half. It was probably a game of two halves they were definitely the better side in the first.

"I can’t take anything away from the players’ effort.”

Lyme Regis are next in action away at Heavitree United Seconds in the Devon and Exeter Division One on Saturday.
