BRIDPORT’S junior squad impressed in an unusual regatta in Newquay just a day after competing in Rame, Cornwall.

The rowers did not let the early start trouble them, and finished their first race in second position.

This event is unusual in the fact that crews do not row in their own boats, these are drawn out of a hat, so racing entails an element of getting used to the gig they are rowing, and this can change throughout the day.

Junior captain, Tom Ramsden, was very pleased with the crew’s performance in their first race.

The second race did not go as well as the first.

Against some tough opposition, Bridport finished in last place.

However, this meant they were entered into the plate semi-finals, and a chance for glory kept their spirits high.

Tom Ramsden gave a round-up of the rest of the day.

He added: “After a short while we were ready for our third race, we had a great start and were instantly in first place.

“We kept this up the whole way round and ended up coming first and winning the plate semi-final.

“Our last race was the plate final. Again we had a great start and stayed in first place for the whole race. We were all overwhelmed and excited.”

This is the best result to be achieved by a Bridport Junior crew, who over the last few years have secured many wins at regattas.

They hope to continue their amazing form into next season.

The whole club are extremely proud of the juniors, who train very hard and are very deserving of this victory.

There are also championships for the men’s and ladies’ crews, held over separate weekends in September.

Bridport’s crews are training hard for these and other upcoming regattas of which the next will be held in Brixham.

The club offers learn to row courses for adults and juniors. If you are interested visit the website bridportgigrowingclub.org or contact the club secretary.
