IAN Kearley’s captain’s weekend was a successful event despite the weather which, although mainly dry, was cloudy with a strong wind.

On Saturday there was a Stableford for all sections of the club and 56 members took part.

There were three men’s prizes and the winner was Russell Weller (19) with 39 points. In second place was Kevin Jones (8) scoring 37 points and third after count-back was Kelvin Dawe (15) with 36 points.

There were two ladies prizes and the first lady was Judy Walters (15) with 32 points and second was Julie Oliver (15) with 31 points. The junior prize was won by Pat Harper with 30 points.

There was an additional prize for ex-members and this was won by Rob Edwardes.

There was good turnout of 74 for the Sunday competition which was a men’s Stableford, incorporating the Chorley Cup.

The man who collected the silverware came from Division Three and that was Andrew Blackmore who carded 37 points.

It was a somewhat lower score that topped Division One and that was Mike Savage’s 33 points. Colin Hore was the winner in Division Two, scoring 35 points.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Mike Savage (9) 33pts, 2 Lewis Craddock (8) 32, 3 (acb) Steve Crabb (6) 31pts

Division Two: 1 Colin Hore (16) 35pts, 2 (acb) Ken Stead (13) 34pts, 3 Howard Mills (18) 34pts.

An evening event raised money for the captain’s charity which is The On Course Foundation.

There was a modest turnout as were the scores for the Midweek Stableford. Larwence Turner (22) topped the field with 33 points. Runner-up was Dave Howat (16) with 32 points and in third place was Peter May (27) scoring 31 points.

The club’s Hardy B team notched up a good win. In the league cup the Bridport team knocked out Rushmore, a team two divisions above them after a play-off involving Ian Thacker and Gary Edwardes. Their next game will be the semi-final.

Veterans’ Section

THERE was a larger turnout than usual for the veterans’ single division, self-entry Stableford because some players should have been involved in an inter-club match that never took place.

Fifty-five players took the field on a cloudy morning with light winds.

Scoring was pretty steady on the whole with no one managing a score in the 40s.

Brian Walsh (16) came out on top with 38 points, just ahead of veterans’ secretary Brian Savery (19) with 37 points. In third place with 36 points was Roger Pollock (20) beating Roy Mathisen (24) on count-back.

The fifth prize-winner, also after count-back was Dougie Howells (19) with 34 points.

Ladies’ Section

AN EG Medal and fourth round of the Centenary Cup was played on Saturday and Tuesday, writes Di Neal.

Both days were reasonable weather-wise but Tuesday proved tricky, as the wind was strong.

RESULTS

Divisions One and Two: 1 Lyn Jessop 104-26=78 (acb), 2 Toshiko Rickets 94-16=78

Division Three: 1 Helen Campbell 114-31=83 (acb), 2 Avril Brown 118-35=83.

Higher handicap ladies played a stableford and the fourth round of the Andrews Cup, the winner was Di Neal and runner up Jean Stephens.

Wednesday saw the annual Friday Fours day out. This year the group had an excellent time at Wheathill Golf Club, their hospitality was second to none.

Thanks go to organiser Lyn Hargrave and the winners of the trophy this year were Carole Hedley and Keith Harvey.

Bridport’s Liz Thompson, Viv Gill and Sally Woolminton played Dudsbury in the Parkin Cup and were successful winning all three games.
