LAST weekend was the men’s Club Championship, a 36-hole Scratch Medal played over two days.

This also incorporates the Fraser Mercer Cup, a scratch competition for those with a handicap of more than 14 and the Peter Ridler Cup, where the best nett scores count. There was an exciting finish to the main event when the championship had to be decided on a three-hole play-off.

Steve Crabb and John White both finished their 36 holes with scores of 160. In the play-off, Crabb snatched victory with a birdie on the last hole.

The Fraser Mercer Cup was won by Doug Miners with a score of 180 and the Peter Ridler Cup was won by Mannie Wellman scoring 141.

Fraser Mercer Cup: 1 Doug Miners 89 & 91=180, 2 (acb) Angus Nicoll 91&90=181, 3 Chris Adams 88&93=181.

Peter Ridler Cup: Mannie Wellman 67&74=141, 2 John White 68&74=142, 3 Andy Webb 67&76=143.

The club’s past captains held their annual get-together for a competition followed by a dinner. The winner of the bowl was John White.

Present captain Ian Kearley attended the England Golf gold medal along with 10 other members at Burnham and Berrow.

Crabb and Russel Weller qualified for the final to take place later in the year in Oxfordshire. Martin Horton finished 11th so is a standby.

Veterans’ Section

FORTY-SEVEN members competed for the George Adams Cup and the result was a resounding victory for captain, Keith Brown.

His nett 68 was six shots clear of runner-up Malcolm Peach in Division One and also won him the silverware.

Another Peach was also a prize-winner as Glyn Peach topped Division Two with a nett 73.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Keith Brown 82-14=68, 2 Malcolm Peach 94-20=74, 3 Mike McGrady 91-16=75.

Division Two: 1 Glyn Peach 101-28=73, 2 Roy Mathisen 98-24=74, 3 (acb) Dave Boggis 104-21=83.

Brown received a two-shot cut to his handicap.

The veterans had an excellent victory in their away match versus Wareham, where they won 5½-½.

Ladies’ Section

SATURDAY saw a qualifying Stableford played in sunshine.

The winner, with 33 points, was Avril Brown, followed by Judy Walters on 30 and third place went to Liz Walker on 24.

Tuesday was the annual Midsummer Madness Stableford when bleary eyed ladies stagger to the club and play a shot gun start at 7am.

The main attraction is the breakfast that follows the game.
