LITTON Cheney’s Nigel Gates won the British Duathlon over-60 title at Windsor Great Park by five minutes from world silver medallist Stephen Redman of Somerset Tri in two hours, 18 minutes, 25 seconds.
Having just won the British Cross Country title, Gates had the advantage on the run but needed to conserve time against the stronger cyclists.
The 10km run, 40km bike, 5km run standard distance was held round ‘the Queen’s back garden’ and competitors were warned that they could be held up by a three-car entourage.
Gates was one of those stopped and said: “I was told afterwards it was the Queen going to church, but they gave me the time lost back so it wasn’t a problem.”
Having won three British titles since Christmas, Gates is planning on a break to focus on starting work at Mountjoy School, Beaminster this summer.
