WEST Bay Sea Angling Club's junior section’s season has finally come to an end with the last match of the year.

Members have encountered some challenging weather conditions this term with one match cancelled and another fished from the Black Hut.

Eleven members and one guest turned out to fish the final fixture, a good figure considering the wet and windy forecast.

Although quite windy, the afternoon was generally dry with most competitors choosing to fish on the inside of East Pier.

After a slow start, a good number of fish soon started coming to the scales with flounder, pout, bass, pollack and rockling.

Guest Josh Craven took an early lead with the first fish of the day, a flounder, but before long he was overtaken by legal-sized fish (fish achieving minimum size take precedence) and soon Eden Lynham, Aaron Chambers, Abbie Button, James Lawrence and Jamie Salvador Swords were battling in the top five positions.

It wasn’t until the latter stages of the match that Jack Parkman stormed into pole position with a double-shot of fish, a shore rockling and pout, both legal-sized, which gave him a strong lead and ultimately secured first place for the youngster.

These fish, along with an earlier undersized flounder, also qualified him for additional prizes.

Salvador Swords achieved second place with Button securing third spot.

This being Christmas and the last match of the year, parents generously donated extra prizes and a special mention must go to Hilary Smith for putting up festive hampers for the top three positions.

The Jurassic League takes place over the last two months of the year, which for 2015 only featured three matches due to a cancellation.

The league results are then based on the aggregate weight of all these matches.

This year’s overall winner of the Jurassic League Trophy, Nathan McMaster, had only a slim lead with a total weight of 554g, with Eden Lynham taking the runner-up trophy with 532g.

After the competition, all the juniors, family and friends retired to the Salthouse to enjoy a buffet.

This year had a ‘best dressed Santa or elf’ theme and was judged by club vice-president Maureen Jackson.

Prizes were awarded for best parent and the top four juniors.

Junior secretary Roger Guppy started proceedings by thanking Steve and Sally Lawrence from the Punch and Judy Bakery for providing buffets free of charge for not only this event, but the Saturday Junior League presentation held in November as well.

Thanks were also given to Richard ‘Tiny’ Daw, Smith and Craig Horton for helping throughout the year, along with Jackson for presenting prizes and trophies.

A very healthy prize table was on offer again thanks to Abbotsbury Fishing Tackle and several individual donors, and a special mention was given to past member Andy Preston who donated a substantial amount of fishing equipment.

Prizes were awarded for the winners of the final match and this was followed by the full results of the league, with a prize for everyone who fished that day.

To end proceedings, Jackson gave a vote of thanks to junior secretary Guppy for running the junior section throughout the year.
