THERE were 14 entrants for the Midweek Medal and two of the top three places were taken by junior club members.

The winner was Tom Hunt and his fine score of 79-12=67 earned him a one-shot handicap cut.

A similar handicap reduction was awarded to Peter May after he came in second with a score of 96-28=68.

The other junior was Mannie Wellman, who is on a roll at the moment, and he finished third with 100-28=72.

Veterans’ Section

THE veterans’ Thursday competition was a three-man team Stableford off full handicap (two best scores to count, all three to count on par-threes).

One team finished way out in front and that was Keith Hicks (17), Brian Osborne (25) and Chris Roberts (20) – their 95 points bettered the next best team by six points.

Alan Harvey (16), Brian Fearon (13) and John Pitchford (23) were second with 89 and close behind with 88 were Keith Brown (13), Richard Fox (19) and Tony Williams (28).

Meanwhile, Bridport lost their away match against Isle of Purbeck 3.5-2.5.

Ladies’ Section

SATURDAY’S medal was played in good conditions which were reflected in some of the scores, writes Di Neal.

Division One was won by Ruth Donovan (99-17=82), while Sara Dunn (99-35=64) and Margaret Thompson (112-31=81) finished first and second in Division Three.

Dunn has only been playing for just over a year and after this round her handicap was cut by six shots.

Tuesday saw Liz Thompson hold her captain’s day where a good turnout of members dressed in Wild West costumes to play a somewhat complicated game in pairs.

With Stetsons, check shirts, water pistols, and even a guitar, the ladies tackled the course, at the halfway point of which a glass of Pimms was available to the players.

Some priceless pictures were taken throughout the day by keen photographer Kieran.

Many prizes were given for various combinations of scores but the overall winners with an amazing score of 42 points were Janie Dowling and Heather Chapman.

Di Loving and Julie Oliver came second followed by Avril Brown and Toshiko Ricketts.

Saturday again was lovely after the horrendous rain the day before and the Castree Cup, a competition where ladies ask a gentleman other than their partners to join them for a game, took place.

This is a flag competition and with the pin near the hole on the 18th green the winners were Wendy Newton and Malcolm Peach.

Sunday’s mixed open was sensibly cancelled due to adverse weather conditions and rearranged to Saturday, September 5.
