THE highlight of the week at Bridport Golf Club was Andy Dennis’ captain’s weekend, which was a great success despite the rather damp weather on the Sunday.

Saturday dawned bright and dry as 105 members arrived to play and support Dennis’ fun weekend, starting with a mixed individual Stableford.

Goodie bags were handed out and even better there was a free barbecue on the 10th cooked and manned by the captain’s family.

The winners of this competition was Roy Gill (40 points on countback) from Trevor Dennis (40), and third on countback again was Mannie Wellman, age 11.

Junior winner Wellman deserves a special mention as he is only 11 years old.

He has only been playing for 18 months and this was his first participation in a senior competition and his first time playing off the white tees.

Di Stothard led the ladies with again 40 points from Sue Walsh (38pts) and Lynne Jessop, was third with 35.

On the Sunday, 40 teams turned out for a four-ball betterball off ¾ handicap, for the prize being The Chorley Cup.

The top two teams both came in with 42 points and after countback this year’s club champion, Graham Hunt, and along with Phil Winton were the cup winners.

Mike Thompson and Jon Legg-Bagg took the runner-up spot and, with 41 points, Steve Crabb and Gary Edwardes were third.

On the Sunday evening, prizes were presented and the raffle drawn.

The ladies’ competition this week was the ping four-ball betterball Stableford.

The winners were Marilyn Wilson and Di Harris (35pts), second were Liz Thompson and Julie Woodroffe (33pts), while Sally Woolmington and Lynne Jessop (32pts), were third.

Those ladies who chose to play a more relaxed game enjoyed Monte Carlo, where you multiply the two players' scores.

The winners were Carol Horne and Sandra March with 53 points and the runners-up were Carole Hedley and Sue Pollock (51pts).

Meanwhile, Bridport had a good win in a mixed friendly against Sherborne and the Friday Fours, a mixed group of members, had an away day at Cricket St Thomasorganised by Lyn Hargrave.

Twenty-four people had a splendid day and everyone received a prize but the trophy for highest score went to Heather Chapman, Di Neal, Phil Huggins and Sue (name to come).

It was a case of a rose among the thorns for the mixed midweek Stableford.

Di Loving didn’t manage to beat the thorns even though their scores were a little on the modest side.

Ted Stordy (15), William Davison (21) and Peter May (28) all came in with 32 points and after countback finished at the top in that order.

Veterans’ Section

THE veterans had a home match versus Wareham on Thursday’s competition day so there was a single division, self-entry Stableford.

The winner was veteran of long-standing, Tony Udal and his 41 points was one better than runner-up Keith Hicks. Then came five players all with 39 points but Dougie Howells (39pts) was beat his rivals on countback to take third place.

Bridport had an emphatic win at home versus Wareham with a 6-0 result.
