TEDBURN ST MARY 0 LYME REGIS 2

TIM Edwards admitted Lyme Regis weren’t at full flow against Tedburn St Mary on Saturday, but was more than happy to secure three points.

Second-half goals from Ben Whittington and Mark Bailey gave the already promoted Seasiders victory, in a Devon & Exeter Division Three contest the Lyme boss believed was a hard slog.

“It was a big pitch on a really hot day and the first half passed us by, we had a couple of chances but we squandered them which was quite frustrating,” he said.

“They had a stand-in keeper in goal and we just didn’t test him enough in the first half.

“We were always in control but we didn’t take the chances.

“They battled hard, tried to stop us playing and we had to be patient. It was one of those games where it was typical at the end of the season.

“Matt Laing at centre-half bossed the game for us and drove us forward but it was not brilliant to be honest.”

Having ground out their 17th league win of the season, the second-placed Seasiders needed a point against Axminster Town Seconds last night to seal the runners-up spot.

Looking at Lyme’s first term in the Devon & Exeter League, Edwards added: “The lads have enjoyed it and adapted well. The teams in the league all want to play good football.

“It would have been nice to win the league but we have come up against Henry’s Cronies, who were by far the best team in the division.”
