IT WAS a cold day for the men’s Stableford competition on Sunday when 65 players took to the course, writes Peter Crowter.

While a rank outsider was whittling down a seemingly insurmountable lead in the Abu Dhabi tournament, there were no such surprises at Bridport where one of the club’s best players won Division One by a considerable margin.

Five-handicap Steve Crabb, with 40 points, finished four points ahead of runner-up Matt Gale.

The result in Division Two was much tighter, with David Corp, also with 40 points, beating Patrick Hart on countback.

Mark McMaster took the top spot in Division Three with 37 points.

RESULT

Division One: 1 Steve Crabb (5) 40 points, 2 (acb) Matt Gale (8) 36, 3 Gary Edwardes (10) 36.

Division Two: 1 (acb) David Corp (15) 40 points, 2 Patrick Hart (13) 40, 3 (acb) Jimmy Gbadebo (12) 39.

Ladies’ Section

FIVE ladies braved the cold and wind to play a three clubs and a putter tournament contested over 11 holes, writes Diana Neal.

The winner with a score of 16 points was Avril Brown, while Carolyn McAllister was runner-up with 13.

The following Tuesday’s game was abandoned after trolleys were blown over and icy rain fell on the few lady members who turned up to play.

The sensible decision to return to the clubhouse was made and coffee warmed up some very cold golfers.

Tuesdays and Thursdays seem to be jinxed of late and the ladies’ main competition and veterans’ event both fell foul of the inclement weather.
