THE men’s Sunday competition was a very special occasion at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club, with the staging of the inaugural Gordon Fox Memorial Trophy.

Gordon’s grandson Samuel cut the ribbon and officially opened the recently completed starter’s hut.

The new-look hut was funded by the Fox family in memory of Gordon, who was the starter for so many open day competitions.

Gordon was a member of the club for almost 50 years, while he was also a past captain, chairman and long-serving director.

The event was a four-man team Texas Scramble with a shotgun start, and there was a fine turnout of 80 players all wanting to remember a great friend and fellow golfer.

The winning team was that of Mike Thompson, Richard Fox, Bob Dewland and Toby Eeles with an excellent nett score of 56.8.

After the competition, John White, chairman of directors, paid tribute to Gordon’s loyal service to the club over the many years he had been a member.

On Wednesday, there was a Midweek Medal and Lawrence Turner was the winner, with a nett score of 70, on countback from Graham Davies.

Both players had their handicaps cut by one stroke.

Veterans’ Section

The veterans’ Thursday event was the annual match between the Ancients and the Moderns, (officially the over-70s versus the under-70s) only this year the cut-off age was changed to 71.

The format for this contest is foursomes matchplay, as played in the Ryder Cup.

Historically, the Moderns tend to emerge the winners, so this year it was decided to make them play off ¾ handicaps while their more mature opponents retained their full quota.

This seemed to work to perfection as the match resulted in a 7-7 tie.

On Monday, the veterans had an away match at Parkstone and came home with a very creditable 3-3 halved result.

Ladies’ Section

THIS week’s competition was for the Par Cup, played over two days, writes Rosemary Shepherd.

Six ladies played on Saturday and 27 on Tuesday, and on both days the weather was chilly for the early starters before warming up and making for a very pleasant round of golf.

Although it was not everyone’s favourite format, giving more minuses than pluses on most cards, some very good scores were recorded during the event.

The top four players each received a cut in their playing handicaps and the winner of the cup was Lynne Jessop with a great score of +3.

The runner-up was Toshiko Ricketts, with +2, on countback from Margaret Thompson and Lyn Hargrave.
