SEATON Tennis Club’s Finals Day saw several matches settled on nerve-jangling championship tie-breaks.

The men’s singles was finally won by Ian Broughton against Simon Prior, while the doubles title went to club coaches Derek Blackmore and Ben Elliott.

That match, like the singles, was decided on a tie-break, with the champions seeing off Kevin Davis and Broughton.

The ladies had slightly more straightforward contests with Jo Little playing superb tennis to beat Teresa Hancock in two sets and A team pair Julie Hopkinson and Nikki Keele running out comfortable winners against B team captain Belinda Bawden and her league team partner Carol Hurst.

In the mixed doubles, Kevin Davis and Susan Green beat Hancock and her mixed B partner Peter Moroz.

In the Plate singles, David Pillinger beat Grayson Newton and Alice Tremlett won against Green.

Green, who showed great stamina in contesting three finals, and Little beat Marion Nelson and Judith Ellard in the ladies’ doubles, while in the men’s doubles, coaches Jason Martin and Pete Morton overcame Dennis Rose and Brian Rodgers.

Lastly, in the mixed doubles, partners Carol Hurst and Bawden faced each other across the net, this time alongside Moby Hill and David Dower respectively.

Hurst and Hill ran out easy winners in the end.

Meanwhile, Seaton’s league teams are faring well more than halfway through the season, with both the men’s and ladies’ A teams holding their own in their respective Exeter and District League divisions.

The ladies’ A team is to be congratulated on an excellent showing following promotion from Division Two as winners last summer.

They have beaten the top two teams in the shape of Torquay A and Victoria Park, and have managed to drop very few sets in the most competitive division in the league.

Similarly, the men’s A team, who were runners-up last summer, are producing good results in Division Two.

The men’s B team have the best chance of the club’s nine league teams to gain promotion. They beat Newton St Cyres 8-0 recently and have moved back into second position in Division Six.

The men’s C team are also chasing promotion with only one loss so far this season, and they have the added incentive of playing the B team next summer if they are promoted.

The ladies’ B team is performing well in Division Four having moved up last year.

They lost narrowly to the top two teams, Budleigh Salterton and David Lloyd B, but have beaten most of the mid-table clubs.

The ladies’ C team are in the top half of Division Six and allowing new players to gain their first experience of representing the club in league matches.

Similarly, the mixed C team, while not able to repeat the other teams’ successes, are also enabling new players to join the team and experience the fun of league matches.
