WHITCHURCH WAYFARERS 88 (1pt) lost to UPLYME & LYME REGIS 89-2 (22pts) by 8 wickets

UPLYME & Lyme Regis finally got their Devon League D Division campaign up and running with a fine eight-wicket win at Whitchurch.

The hosts batted first and made slow progress against the opening attack of Nick Dinnison and Rhys Davies.

Pace bowler Dinnison made the breakthrough when he trapped opener Credicott leg before for four and, not to be outdone, Davies then bowled Powell.

Both bowlers continued to attack with accuracy and penetration, taking another wicket each to reduce the Wayfarers to 33-4.

Visiting captain Steve Batey then joined the attack and ripped through the lower order by claiming 5-10 in a devastating seven-over spell.

Aussie Charlie Warner took the remaining wicket to leave Whitchurch 88 all out.

The score could have been a lot less if Uplyme had not contributed 39 extras to the total, a factor that skipper Batey will have to address as the league campaign progresses.

In reply, Uplyme lost openers Mark Batey and Rob Thom before the Whittington brothers, Jedd (46no) and Ben (29no) saw their side home with 33 overs to spare.

COUNTESS WEAR 122 (4pts) lost to UPLYME & LYME REGIS II 123-6 (20pts) by 4 wickets

AFTER a heavy defeat at the hands of Shobrooke Park the previous weekend, Uplyme & Lyme Regis Seconds bounced back with a win at home to Countess Wear.

Opting to bowl first in the Devon League Seconds D East Division clash, Uplyme welcomed back the experienced Toby Newson who returned figures of 1-29 in his nine overs and set the standard for the other bowlers.

Wear had reached 70-2 by the halfway stage and had a good platform to build from.

However, at this point, skipper Rodney Holmes turned to spin and Daley Holmes delivered, taking two wickets with consecutive balls and going on to snare another two.

This opened the gate for the pace of Wallace Blackmore, George Baker and Wesley and Rodney Holmes who shared the remaining wickets.

All the bowlers were backed up by an excellent display in the field, not least by Tyler Wellman who took three excellent catches.

The Uplyme innings started confidently and they had made 27 before Clarke was bowled.

Tyler Wellman continued to impress and push for a first-team place with some spark-ling shots – he took the score to 51 before being caught and bowled by John Heaver.

The innings then stalled somewhat before the experienced hands of Derek Wellman (7no) and Rodney Holmes (29no) rescued the situation to steer their team across the line.

Uplyme & Lyme Regis 90-5 beat Cerne Valley 63-7 by 27runs

THE Uplyme juniors, in partnership with the Woodroffe School, enjoyed a win in their first outing of the season.

They made 90-5 in their allotted 18 overs batting first thanks mainly to the contributions of Daley Holmes (27 retired), Ben Prosser (19) and 35 extras.

In reply, Cerne started brightly and South African-born Helstead soon reach- ed the retirement score of 25 with the aid of five boundaries.

Max Helston and Jake Sweetland both bowled well but it was left to Holmes (4-10), Prosser (2-9) and Rob Shep-herd (1-13) to take the wickets and leave Cerne on 63-7 at the close.
