COLFOX SCHOOL 2 WEY VALLEY SCHOOL 1

COLFOX’S Year Nine football team sealed their second cup final success in three years with a dramatic win against Wey Valley at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Colfox got off to a great start but as the first half went on the confidence of the Wey Valley side grew.

Midway through the opening period the outstanding Wey Valley captain passed to his winger and he set off on a run from the halfway line.

A combination of poor defending and excellent dribbling allowed him to unleash a thunderous shot which gave the Colfox keeper no chance.

This seemed to spur on the Wey Valley players and they finished the half the stronger side.

But Colfox went straight on the attack after the break, although they couldn’t take the chances they created.

However, the equaliser finally came in the shape of a trademark 25-yard screamer from Toby Marsh.

Jaydon Brown slotted a lovely pass through and Marsh made some space where there appeared to be very little before firing a thunderbolt past the Wey Valley keeper.

Marsh grew in confidence and was at it again with two more long-range efforts that sailed just wide and inches over the bar.

Wey Valley were still not out of it but the Colfox back four of Harry Tomkins, Cameron Sayers, Will Clarke and James McGrady dealt with everything that was thrown at them.

With just four minutes remaining, and the game looking like going into extra-time, Colfox were awarded a free-kick.

James Cox stepped up to take it and he whipped in a glorious cross which McGrady met with a superb header that flew in.

Wey Valley had one more chance in the last minute but the effort was blocked.

It was an incredibly tight game with very little between the sides and both sets of players deserve tremendous credit for the spirit that the final was played in.
