Triumph at Tiverton will seal promotion
9:13am Wednesday 22nd August 2012 in Cricket
UPLYME & Lyme Regis 206-8 (15pts) drew with WHITCHURCH 151-8 (9pts)
ELEVEN points is all that separates Uplyme & Lyme Regis and a place in next year’s Devon League D Division.
The E Division table-toppers, although frustrated to be held to a winning draw against Whitchurch, moved a step closer to securing promotion as they collected 15 points at the weekend.
And another positive result this Saturday, at rock-bottom Tiverton & Bickleigh, will guarantee Uplyme’s spot in the next tier with one game still to play.
Saturday’s home match also acted as a fond farewell for skipper Ashley Caddy, who has now emigrated to Hong Kong.
And the departing captain has tasked his team-mates with not only sealing promotion, but also lifting the E Division title.
He said: “We are very close now, but I want to go up as champions and want us to keep playing the sort of cricket we are serving up in the last two games.
“Clearly this coming weekend is a pivotal one with Shaldon going to Kentisbeare. They both can’t win that one so, as long as we do our work correctly at Tiverton & Bickleigh, we may well have a much clearer picture of the end game this Saturday night.”
Caddy may have been caught for a duck on his final outing but he hit back in fine style with the leather, bagging two wickets and seven maidens in his 13-over spell.
Brother Adam Caddy was the home side’s leading light with the bat, top scoring with 65.
Steve Batey (45) also delivered a fine knock and Dave Norman (32) made a useful contribution as Uplyme closed on 206-8.
The home attack proved up to the task of defending that total with every member claiming at least one scalp.
Billy Barriball (51) and Martyn Credicott (32) kept Whitchurch in contention but as the innings progressed the visitors were forced to take a more cautious approach.
A losing draw soon became their primary target and the seventh-placed outfit achieved that aim after finishing on 151-8 – much to Uplyme’s frustrations.
