Waiting game for Everitt

BEAMINSTER are still waiting to kick-off their Dorset Division Two campaign after suffering back-to-back postponements due to the recent wet weather, writes Adam Summers.

Frustrated skipper Will Everitt is now keeping his fingers crossed ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Wimborne & Colehill Seconds but with more rain forecast for later in the week, a hat-trick of call-offs could well be on the cards.

Everitt said: “That’s now two games down but bizarrely we are still in mid-table despite having not bowled a single ball.

“We had a good team for last Saturday’s home game against Poole Town Seconds and we felt pretty confident we would get a full afternoon’s cricket.

“However, the previous evening, we were then told it was looking too wet to get a wicket ready.

“It was bitterly frustrating particularly as a lot of teams played.

“With the new system, we still picked up five points but had we played we felt we would have picked up at least 10 or possibly even won the game so it was extremely disappointing.”

With very little cricket behind them, some of the first-team squad travelled with the seconds instead and helped them to a 36-run victory over their counterparts from Portland Red Triangle in Division Six North & West.

Everitt added: “With all our pre-season friendlies having fallen to the weather too, a lot of the lads have had very little cricket so a few of us went with the seconds to Portland.

“In that division there are no rules against all-weather wickets and where Portland drains well we managed to get a game in.

“It was good for everyone to get out in the middle for a bit and play some cricket, and hopefully that will help us get straight back into it once we finally get a dry weekend.”

New-signing Tom Goat-ley will miss this weekend’s trip to Wimborne but Everitt is still hopeful of having another useful line-up.

He said: “There is probably going to be a couple unavailable but we should still be strong enough to go there and get a good result if it goes ahead.”
