BRIDPORT 233-8 (20pts) beat KINGSTON LACY 138 (6pts) by 95 runs

DUANE Gay seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to cricket captaincy after leading the hosts to victory over previously unbeaten Kingston Lacy.

The new Bridport skipper has now won his first two games in charge, the latest coming by a huge margin of 95 runs.

The Bridport batsmen laid the foundations for the win with Sam Challis (47), Gay (36) and Liam Toohill (35) guiding the home side to 233-8.

Lacy opener Dale Coghlan (44) went after the Bridport bowling from the start of the visitors’ reply but when he was out, bowled by Rodney Gay (3-32), there was only going to be one winner of the Division Three clash.

The captain chipped in with 3-19 and Challis (2-7), Toohill (1-31) and Alex Lee (1-19) all claimed wickets, while Calvin Lewis (0-8) was economical in his two-over spell, as Lacy were all out for 138.

A modest Bridport skipper said: “It was down to the team. The spirit among the squad is phenomenal.

“They were 90-1 at one stage and everyone’s heads were down a bit in the field.

“But as soon as we got their opener out we got on top of them and they never looked like they could beat us.

“Getting results like we have in recent weeks is more to do with having players back rather than what I’m doing as captain – there are a lot of people in that team who could be the captain.

“As long as we keep this team together then we will do well and I see no reason why we can’t go up again this year.”

And Gay was again quick to praise some of Bridport’s standout performers against Lacy.

He added: “Sam batted really well again and his innings made all the difference.

“Liam batted well too and Alex was superb in the way he occupied the crease while wickets were falling at the other end.

“All of the bowlers made contributions and getting their opener out was a game-changer.”

Bridport are away to Pimperne on Saturday as they chase a third successive league win.
