BOTH Uplyme & Lyme Regis teams bashed a combined total of 555 runs over the weekend but they still experienced mixed fortunes.

The first team travelled to table-toppers Clyst Hydon in the Devon League D Division where they went down by 40 runs.

The home side’s opening pair put on over 200 for the opening wicket but once that stand was broken the rest of the order collapsed thanks to efforts of part-time bowler Mark Brimicombe, whose slow left arm returned figures of 6-52 from eight overs.

Chasing a total of 290, Uplyme lost Mark Batey (1) early in their reply before Jedd and Ben Whittington came together and put on a third-wicket stand of 64 to give their side some hope.

The pair scored 52 and 60 respectively while skipper Steve Batey added 48 later on but in the end their efforts fell short following the reintroduction of Sri Lankan fast bowler Dhanuja Haturusingha (4-28), who knocked over the last three wickets in quick succession with seven overs of the innings still remaining. Thankfully for the club the outcome was very different for the seconds in D Division East as they picked up a stunning home victory over their counterparts from Whimple.

The hosts put on 305 in the opening innings with Eddie Clarke (37), Tyler Wellman (47), Dave Norman (56) and Wesley Holmes (30no) all making valuable contributions.

However, the star of the show was clearly Alfie Bellworthy (98), who batted superbly only to fall agonisingly short of what would have been a deserved maiden century.

Whimple never looked like reaching that huge target after the turnaround and were eventually restricted to 162-9 with Wallace Blackmore (2-30), Rodney Holmes (2-12), Wesley Holmes (2-30) and Ali Rattenbury (2-39) all picking up two wickets apiece.

The first team travel to Filleigh on Saturday while the seconds take on Shoebrooke Park at All Saints.
