Mike's hole-in-one at Bridport
9:04am Wednesday 3rd October 2012 in Sport
MIKE Thompson landed his first-ever hole-in-one during the men’s midweek Stableford, writes Peter Crowter.
The hole in question was the 173-yard 10th over the pond. With a rescue club the 13-handicapper landed the ball on the narrow bank on the far side of the pond which then bounced over the wall, rolled across the green and into the hole.
The five points boosted his score but were not enough to get him among the winners and top man on the day was Robin Ormsby (19) with 38 points.
Peter Stone (15) and Stephen Pratt (8) both carded 37 points with the former taking the runner-up spot after countback.
Sunday’s competition was a Three-Man Texas Scramble (10 per cent of combined handicaps) and 23 teams competed on a dry morning but with strong, gusty winds.
There was only 0.1 between the second and third teams’ nett scores but the team of Gary Edwardes, Steve Crabb and Matt Gale were the clear winners with a score of 60.3.
Result: 1 Gary Edwardes, Steve Crabb & Matt Gale 63 (2.7) 60.3, 2 Pat Woolmington, Ed Cary & Ben Ashton 66 (2.0) 64, 3 Ian Thacker, Martin Drennan & Derek Griggs 69 (4.9) 64.1.
* The veterans’ Thursday competition was an ‘Ancient versus Moderns’ match.
The dividing age used to be 70 but there were too many ‘Ancients’ so the bar had to be raised to 72.
On the day, the youngsters got the better of their seniors with an 8-5 victory. The veterans also travelled to Parkstone for a match and put up a creditable performance only to lose narrowly, 3½-2½.
* The Daily Mail Foursomes qualifying round was played over two days with weather conditions slightly more favourable on the first day, writes Sue Pollock.
The winners were Ruth Donovan and Jane Dowling, scoring 36 points, while the runners-up were Marion Hurley and Carole Brown with 33 points.
Donovan and Dowling must now wait to find out if they have made it through to the next round of this national competition.
