Milford massacred in strong show

EXCELLENT WIN: Bridport with representatives from sponsors Battens Jewellers
Bridport III 20 MILFORD II 1
BRIDPORT emphasised how strong a team they are going to be this season with an emphatic victory over an experienced Milford side.
This was a terrific performance by all members who are all showing what useful players they have turned out to be.
Bridport number one Steve Hodder showed why he warrants the top spot with a very good performance against his Milford counterpart Dave Hart.
It was Hodder’s intelligent and sound play that caused Hart to make mistakes at critical times in the game.
Although Hart played some good shots, Hodder intelligently counter-attacked, which enabled him to prevail 9-6, 9-2, 9-4. The number two clash between Briport’s Ed Mamanta and Milford’s Ian Chislett Bruce was very much a one-sided affair in favour of Mamanta. In a brilliant display, Mamanta’s power play dominated and outwitted his opponent on every occasion to win 9-0, 9-0, 9-0.
It was good to see Mike Perry playing at three back to his usual good form against Milford’s Ian Murray.
It was the variety of Perry’s shots that gave Murray a tough time, forcing him to all corners of the court.
This sort of pressure paid dividends and set up a sweeping 9-6, 9-3, 9-1 victory for the Bridport player.
Home number four Paul Cross had a very good workout in his match against Milford’s Wayne Wood, and was given a harder match than what the scoreline suggests. The clash was equal in quite a few aspects but one thing Cross had was his competitive and fighting ability, consequently this was to force his opponent into making errors at important stages. Eventually Cross took his chances and went on to record a 9-3, 9-2, 4-9, 9-0 victory.
Robert Muir, at five for Bridport, had a little trouble in defeating Milford’s John Satchwell.
Muir was in masterly form throughout and dominated the proceedings from the start. He never let his opponent into the match and eventually claimed an easy 9-5, 9-4, 9-0 victory.
