OLYMPIC silver medallist Stuart Bithell triumphed in the Merlin National Championships at Lyme Regis . The event attracted more than 80 Merlin Rocket dinghies and was hosted by Lyme Regis Sailing Club with Jerry Rook as the principal race officer.

Tricky conditions were experienced on several days during the week. But the required number of races was completed to make the championship viable with Bithell and his crew winning overall.

Although races were run far offshore, spectators on the seafront at Lyme enjoyed watching the large fleet of colourful boats race on the horizon.

The event was a fitting complement to Candles on the Cobb which, once again, was such a great success.

An organiser said: “Sailors and their families took full advantage of the facilities at Lyme Regis and said how much they appreciated the welcome they received both from the sailing club and the town.”
