ONE of only two girls to feature in the annual HMC Golf Foursomes Championship, Lyme Regis ace Sophie Keech helped Millfield claim the overall title.

The event at Burnham & Burrow Golf Club, which saw eight schools from across Britain compete for the crown, was marred by some dreadful weather.

However, all games went ahead with Millfield coming out on top.

After qualifying from one of two groups of four, Millfield faced Whitgift School from South Croydon and ran out 2-1 winners in a tough and tense final.

Keech played some outstanding golf in the face of terrible conditions and with her partner, Adan Yates, returned with a 100 per cent four-match winning record to help Millfield to their national triumph.

Shortly after the event, Keech travelled to Yeovil to compete in the South West Ladies Golf Championship.

Two 18-hole medal rounds would determine the top-16 qualifiers for a match-play knockout to decide this year’s champion.

Keech continued her rich vein of form and carded an impressive 142 gross after two rounds, which was level par, to lie second overall.

This gave her a second seed in the knockout stages, but unfortunately she lost in her last-16 match against fellow Lyme Regis golfer Jane Southcombe.

Keech is currently enjoying a week off before she contests four big tournaments in August, the first being the English Under-18 Championships at Cheshire in a fortnight’s time.
