Senior looking for a big finish

TREVOR Senior wants the Bees to finish the season on a high at St Mary’s Field on Saturday.

Bridport take on mid-table Street (3pm) and although there is nothing riding on the encounter in terms of league status, it still promises to be an intriguing clash.

Senior, whose side currently sit 14th in the Toolstation Western Premier Division, said: “It has been a strange season after last year’s euphoria of promotion from Division One.

“It has been a step up and a learning curve and I think over the course of the campaign we have improved and got stronger.

“It would certainly be nice to finish with a positive result but Street have added one or two players and will no doubt be tough opposition.

“There is quite a gap between us and the bottom three so there is no doubt that we deserve to stay up. We have won 10 games and if we can add another on Saturday it would pretty much take that tally to a third of our league matches, which would be a decent return.

“Looking ahead, we need to improve and start taking points off the top-six. We have taken just one off them this season and that needs to change.

“Our biggest problem has been taking chances when we have created them.

“It is about being ruthless and I am not just talking about the forwards either.

“We could also do with that player that scores 20 goals a season.

“We lost Ryan Dovell last summer to Dorchester Town and Sam Charles to injury before Christmas and there is no doubt we have missed them.

“Tom Richardson has worked hard and Dan Wise has scored consistently from midfield but we have missed that out-and-out goalscorer up front, which is something we are looking to bring in.”

Four other players that have particularly impressed Senior this season are Sam Filkins, Joe Charles, Ryan Hayter and Matt Condliffe.

He added: “Sam Filkins has grown in stature over the last year and the fact he is still only 19 just goes to show the potential he has. He has developed into one of the best keepers in this division and there is no doubt that the extra games and training he has been getting at university has certainly helped him.

“Joe is also just 19 and the way he has stepped up to this level has just been fantastic while Ryan has proved a lot of people wrong, including members of the coaching staff.

“We thought he might struggle but he has been outstanding, as has Matt, who has been one of our most consistent players throughout the season.”
