Andy has opponents caught in a Webb
THE men’s Sunday competition was the RNLI Medal and 71 players took part, writes Peter Crowter. There were obviously local variations in the weather because while Charmouth enjoyed a sunny morning the weather was wet and windy for the golfers at Bridport & West Dorset – and even worse in the afternoon.
Across the divisions, six of the leading nine players all came in with a nett score of 69 but the overall winner by a clear three strokes was Division Three’s Andy Webb with an excellent 66.
RESULTS Division One: 1 Gary Edwardes 78-9-69, 2 Phil Winton 80-10-70, 3 Bryn Dare (acb) 83-12-71.
Division Two: (acb) Brian Osborne 87-18-69. 2 (acb) Richard Balson 84-15-69, 3 Richard Fox 85-16-69.
Division Three: 1 Andy Webb 88-22-66, 2 (acb) , 2 Terry Cleal 89-20-69, 3 Bob Dewland 92-23-69. Five players carded twos. Webb had his handicap cut by two strokes – Osborne and Dewland by one.
n Hardy B captain Ian Thacker was pleased with the result of their first match of the season after promotion when they halved their away match with Ashley Wood 2½-2½.
n The veterans’ Thursday competition was a four-ball better-ball stableford, play-ed off ¾ handicap, and 28 pairs took part on a cold morning with rain showers forecast. However, most of the showers stayed out to sea but the stiff breeze kept the scoring on a moderated level.
Three pairs came in each with 36 points on their cards but the winners by a clear two points were Nick Franks and Dave Northover with 38 points.
RESULTS 1 Nick Franks (11) & Dave Northover (21) 38 points, 2 (acb), 2 Dougie Howells (17) & Max Williams (23) 36 points, 3 (acb) Charles Yearley (20) & Ian Perry (20) 36 points, 4 Angus Nicoll (12) & Bob Jukes (24) 36 points.
* Bridport veterans beat Weymouth 5-1 at home thus retaining the Nantes Trophy.
Bridport also won their home match against Ashley Wood, 3½-2½.
