THE veterans’ Thursday competition was the Roy Thompson Cup – a Medal off the white tees at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club.

A fine morning at last for the senior section of the club though there was a brisk breeze which may have accounted for eight players of the field of 55 coming in with N/R on their cards.

The top three players in Division One all beat the best of Division Two. Runner-up after count-back was Gerald Allum with a score of 70 but the winner of the Roy Thompson Cup by a clear three strokes was Peter Davies.

Leader of Division Two was Terry Garrett with 72.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Peter Davies 84-17-67, 2 (acb) Gerald Allum 88-18-70, 3 Angus Nicoll 82-12-70 (lowest gross).

Division Two: 1 Terry Garrett 93-21-72 (lg), 2 Keith Pereaux 99-26-73, 3 Gerald Moss 102-28-74. Davies and Nicoll received a one-shot handicap reduction.

*THE men held two competitions.

The first was the Sanctuary Cup, a bogey competition for 18 and over handicaps, with Steve Edgar (+5) coming out on top.

The second was a Three Clubs and a Putter Stableford, in which John Burwood prevailed.

RESULTS

1 Steve Edgar (27) +5, 2 Pete Johnston (22) +4, 3 Colin Hore (19) +3.

All three players received a one-shot handicap reduction.

* THE Sunday competition was the Men’s September Medal.

There were 77 starters and some very good scoring with nine players carding sub-70 nett scores.

The winner by a clear two strokes was Division Two’s Bryn Dare with a fine nett 65. RESULTS Division One: 1 (acb) Mike Franklin 77-10-67, 2 Matt Gale 77-10-67, 3 Patrick Woolmington 70-2-68.

Division Two: 1 Bryn Dare 78-13-65, 2 Ian Thacker 84-16-68, 3 (acb) Tyler Lennox-Gordon 84-15-69.

Division Three: 1 Terry Cleal 90-23-67, 2 (acb) David Faithfull 95-25-70, 3 Martin Farnham (acb) 92-22-70.

Gale, Dare, Thacker and Cleal all received a one-shot handicap reduction.

* PLAYED out on Saturday was the 42nd Jack’s Jokers challenge match.

These matches were started by Jack White, legendary dad of present chairman John White, in 1969 against the then club steward Teddy Rimer.

Present steward Reg Pitcher took up the challenge in 1988 with his team Reg’s Renegades.

On Saturday the Renegades won 7½-4½ and legend has it this is the first time Reg’s team have won.

Juniors: 1 Tyler Lennox-Gordon (14) 34, 2 James Prendergast (12) 30.

Midweek Stableford: 1 (acb) Barry Morfett (23) 38, 2 Patrick Woolmington (3) 38, 3 Brian Walsh (17) 36. Woolmington’s handicap is now two. n CAROLE Brown lifted the Carter Cup – a knockout competition open to all and the second most important competition after the Scratch Cup, writes Lyn Hargrave.

Brown was four up after two birdies on the front nine but opponent Nicky Stone fought back valiantly.

On the 16th, Brown had a putt to win but missed allowing Stone to claw back one on the 17th.

However, after both players parred the 18th, Brown triumphed by the narrowest of margins.

The rest of the ladies played Foursomes Stableford Monte Carlo, Jan Clark and Sue Walsh (59 points) the winning pair.

Elsewhere, the Ladies won 4-1 in a friendly match at home to Sherborne.
