BUSY Trevor Senior hopes to complete the first player signings of his reign within the next week after stepping up his search for fresh blood.
The newly installed Bridport boss revealed negotiations with forwards Matt Moores, Toni Musmeci and Adam Lehelleco are all at an advanced stage.
Moores, 22, underwent a successful trial at St Mary’s Field last week and has been training with the squad as pre-season preparations intensify.
Nineteen-year-old Musmeci played for Senior at Dorchester Under-18s two seasons ago while Lehelleco is a former Sherborne Town regular.
There are just five weeks until Bridport kick-off their 2009/10 Toolstation Western League Division One season and nine days until they entertain Weymouth in a friendly.
Senior, whose philosophy is one of evolution not revolution, is keen to stamp his influence on the squad he inherited from departed manager Ian Hutchinson before August 8.
He said: “The hardest part is getting players to come down here but once they do and they see the ground and surroundings it will encourage them to stay.
“Quite a few players I have spoken to have said they want to try their luck at a higher level first so we are playing second fiddle to bigger clubs.
“But if they don’t get signed on at a higher level then we are in a position to benefit with the incentive of first-team football.
“Word of mouth is the best way of attracting players to the club. If we can get one of two down here then word spreads and others want to join.
“It would be nice to have new people on board as soon as possible so they have time to gel with the current squad and I’m confident of doing this.”
The first-team were joined by the reserves and thirds for training on Tuesday night but Senior admitted fitness levels must be improved upon.
“There are a few lads who need to get fitter,” he said.
“Two training sessions per week are not enough, the players will need to work hard on their fitness in their own time.
“Hutch wanted to bring them back early for this reason and it will be obvious come the start of the season which players aren’t in the best shape because they won’t be starting.”
As well as being on the prowl for potential transfer targets, Senior is on the lookout for an assistant after Paul Toms turned down the chance to be reunited with his former manager.
The Bees’ chief insisted he would remain patient and that finding a deputy is not his priority given the wealth of managerial experience already at the club.
Senior added: “I’m not going to rush bringing an assistant in, if I can get someone in before the beginning of the season that would be great but if not then so be it.
“I’ve got Mike Savage, Mark Lock and Steve Crabb at the club and they will assist me if I need them to.”
