LYME Regis Bowls Club saw a host of great contests and trophies handed out from their club finals’ weekend.

In the Men’s Four Wood Championship, Barry Rattenbury beat Paul Pomeroy with a 21-14 win.

Pomeroy never looked comfortable on rink two, struggling with both line and weight.

Rattenbury took full advantage of Pomeroy’s poor form as he was 10-0 up after six ends. After a brief rally, and reducing the deficit to 15-11, Rattenbury held his nerve as he kept drawing and was a comfortable winner in the end.

In the Men’s Two Wood, Pomeroy beat Allan Weech 17-7 after being held at 7-7, 12 ends gone.

Charlie Barber took a 21-11 win over Steve Pomeroy in the Men’s Four Wood Handicap.

Steve Pomeroy struggled to find his true form and allowed Charlie Barber to settle into an easy drawing rhythm early in the game.

Barber grew in confidence as the game progressed and was a comfortable winner at 21-11.

The Men’s Four Wood Pairs was the most enthralling game of the first day as Paul Edmonds and Roger Legg lost 22-21 to Alan Nabarro and Don Meyland.

At 20-6 down Alan Nabarro and Don Meyland looked dead and buried but staged a stunning comeback to win 22-21 against Paul Edmonds and Roger Legg.

Nabarro started finding the jack, while Meyland’s weighted woods were finding their target and the deficit started to disappear.

Try as hard as they could, Edmonds and Legg had no answer to this surge and suddenly found themselves all square at 21-21 with one end to go.

Despite some desperate and near-miss bowling from Edmonds and Legg, Nabarro and Meyland hung on to a single shot for the match.

The Ladies’ Two Wood produced the first upset of the day as Jean Kesterton beat Chris Barber 15-8.

The much fancied, and in form, Barber was comprehensively out-bowled by Jean Kesterton, who led from start to finish.

Ann Allman and Paul Pomeroy claimed a comprehensive 28-8 win over Jasmin Bishop and Allan Weech in the Ladies’ Invitation.

Allman and Pomeroy sealed victory when a driven wood from Weech went astray and let Allman and Pomeroy pick up a seven which basically cemented the end result.

In the Ladies’ Handicap, Nola Stephens turned the screw with some fine draw bowling. Courtenay-Smith’s game seemed to go and she never recovered as Stephens claimed an easy 24-12 win.

Stephens took a 22-15 win over Pam Weech in the Fillies.

Nola Stephens raced to a 9-2 lead after five ends in her 22-15 victory over Pam Weech and looked very much in charge.

However, Weech retaliated to close the gap to 11-9 and it looked like game on, but Stephens was having none of it and eased to a comfortable 22-15 win.

The Henry Bloom Rosebowl is contested by individuals who have not won a singles event of any description. This year the accolade fell to Chris Pomeroy who, with her league experience, was just too wily for Lorna Young who will have to develop her backhand game if she is to compete at this level as Pomeroy won 21-10.

In the Ladies’ Four Wood Championship, Ann Allman got off to a strong start and continued to edge Diana Courtenay-Smith 21-19.

Allman was soon leading by 6-2 but, on the seventh end, Courtenay-Smith moved the jack sideways and Ann failed to adjust her line giving her three count and a slender lead at 7-6.

For the next 14 ends Courtenay-Smith was never behind but Allman fought back, after dropping a four, to level the scores at 19-19 after 22 ends.

Allman held her nerve, picking up the two shots required for victory on the 23rd.

The Three Set Singles final was played over five sets, which Geoff Clode won 3-1 against Roger Legg.

Avril Sherring and Chris Barber edged past Virginia Henson and Nola Stephens 19-18 in the Ladies Four Wood Pairs when Barber got a nudge on one of Sherring’s short woods and narrowly pushed it in for shot and the match.

In the ‘Rocky’ trophy, Alan Weech was successful in his third attempt to get his hands on a trophy, beating Phil Stephens 21-14.

In the two-wood Mixed Pairs, Barry Driscoll and Nola Stephens beat Jasmine Bishop and Mike Knight 21-12.

This was Nola’s fourth game of the weekend and, being paired with fast improving Barry Driscoll, would prove to be the stronger pair as they took the title 21-12

Lastly, Ann and Trevor Allman claimed their sixth married couples title with a 23-18 win, despite a strong comeback from Chris and Steve Pomeroy.
