BRIDPORT Gig Rowing Club finished their incredible season on a high by wrapping up the Jurassic Regional League for the second consecutive season at Lyme Regis.
Their performance in the last race put them 73 points ahead of second-placed Swanage, epitomising their dominance in the league across all categories.
The club never fell below first throughout the entire season highlighting the consistency and fitness of the squad as well as their talent.
The Exmouth regatta stands out as a highlight for the club in their outstanding season with all participating crews coming first.
The ladies’ B crew and the mixed crew also completed the impressive feat of completing a season unbeaten displaying the club’s depth of talent and competition for places for the A crew.
Rowing captain Stephen Goodman congratulated the club for its season, as he said it had put: “Bridport Gig Rowing Club on the map.”
He also hopes the club will be able to challenge the big clubs at the National Gig Championships in Newquay over the coming weeks.
As a collective the ladies’ squad won a total of 14 out of 18 races and never failed to record a podium place in any race they entered.
Ladies’ captain Rachel Hamblett commended the excellent work ethic of the ladies throughout the season stating that it had “certainly paid off.”
She added that she was “looking forward to seeing what the all of the ladies’ crews could achieve next year.”
The men’s squad also completed a superb season with the A crew finishing first in their league, a feat matched by the veterans.
The men’s B finished a commendable second despite injuries hampering their season.
Men’s captain Lewis Webster praised the fitness of the squad and also shone a light on the younger members of the squad, adding it was “great to row with some promising lads that had come through the youth set up.”
The under-16s completed an exceptional season at Lyme Regis, ranking third in their league, which is a phenomenal achievement considering that for many it was their first time picking up an oar.
Sarah Girling, junior coordinator, said she was: “Incredibly proud of the commitment and passion displayed by all” and added that she believes they are the future of the club.
The club has amassed a haul of trophies throughout the season all of which will be displayed at the tourist office in Bridport from Monday, September 24.
While the club is going from strength to strength they always need new recruits to bolster their ranks and increase competition for places as well as helping the sport grow as a whole.
They implore anyone interested in gig racing, or those looking to join a new team sport to contact them on bridportgigclub.org
