BRIDPORT & West Dorset Golf Club held their club championship, which was played over two rounds, writes Peter Crowter.

This incorporated the Fraser Mercer Cup – best gross score, with entrants having 14+ handicap and also the Peter Ridler Cup for best nett score.

The Scratch Cup, for the best gross score, was won by Eddie Cary (77+82 – 159) making him the new club champion.

Runner-up was Kevin Jones (84+78 – 162).

Steve Crabb was third with (80+82 – 162).

The Fraser Mercer Cup was won by Dave Howat (86+87 – 173). Second was Martin Drennan (90+86 – 176) with Nathan Dunford third (90+90 –180).

Mike Thompson won the Peter Ridler Cup (69+70 – 139).

Dave Howat finished second (70+71 –141, while Kevin Jones took third (74+68 – 142).

In a mixed midweek Stableford, Fiona Lomax (34) won by a huge margin of 11 points scoring 42 points with Peter May (27) some way behind with his 31 points.

Alan Jowett (22) took third place with 29 points.

Veterans' Section

MEMBERS played another single division self-entry Stableford on their Thursday competition day.

Thirty-nine players turned out on the year’s longest day which was fine and warm.

The clear winner by two points was Richard Fox (19) scoring 41 points.

Ray Southcombe (14), with 39 points, was placed second after countback from Terry Garrett (25) who carded the same score.

George Brown (11) took the fourth spot with 38 points and Karl Rogers (22) was fifth after countback with 37 points.

Ladies' Section

IT WAS a close run contest when Bridport Ladies played the Saturday Cup, writes Lyn Jessop.

In first place, with three pars, was Viv Gill (32pts), while Ruth Donovan took second on 31 points on countback from Sue Winkle, also with 31 points.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Bridport hosted the Dorset Ladies' Interclub Foursomes.

Nicky Stones and Ruth Donovan represented Bridport in the silver division reaching the final.

The bronze couple from Bridport were Liz Thompson and Julie Woodroffe who qualified on Tuesday but were just beaten by Parkstone in the semi-finals.

The course was in excellent condition for the event and the hospitality earned much appreciation from the visitors.
