LYME Regis’ newly-appointed manager Gerard Hitchcock admits becoming boss is something he has been looking to do for a “little while”.

Hitchcock succeeded interim player-manager Mark Bailey last week and has run the reserves side for 11 years.

Hitchcock told the Bridport News: “It is something I have been looking to do for a little while. There has not been the right opportunity but this year definitely, so I’m happy with it.

“I just felt that the time was right to make the step forward.”

Hitchcock was appointed as manager at the Lyme AGM but Hitchcock admitted the club knew what was going to happen a week or so beforehand.

“I am just looking forward to getting into it really.

“It is good to finally get it in place and get it all voted through the committee and everyone was in favour so it is always a bit of a bonus knowing that you have got everyone behind you.”

Hitchcock also confirmed that he aims to keep former interim player-manager Bailey involved in the management structure alongside his playing duties.

“He has still got a lot to give as a player and I do not want that to impede too much on his playing.

“I will definitely be keeping him on the side to get ideas from him.”

Lyme are still awaiting to find out if they will be promoted, which will happen at the Devon & Exeter league’s AGM, but the Seasiders hope they will be challenging for the top half of the table should they make it.
