AXMINSTER Bowls Club are ending their season on a high with success on two fronts.

Firstly, the Devon club won the Carpet Cup held at Kingsteignton with Philippa White, David Harris, Ann Clayton and Bob Sherborne the successful quartet who won a tight competition on shot difference.

Meanwhile, the Over-60s men's team finished as runners-up in their Exeter & District League which guarantees promotion for next season, despite losing our final game at Tiverton WE (46-30).

Axminster clinched promotion the previous week with an excellent home win against Cullompton (41-20) with wins on both rinks – John Ellis, David Harris and Bob Sherborne (24-9) and John Hill, George Mabon and Doug Looskan (17-11)

Axminster only played one mixed friendly at Severalls where they were beaten (49-37) with a winning rink of Philippa White, David Harris, Alan McLaren (guest) and Steven Apsey (24-10).

The other scheduled games at home to Chardstock and away at Culmvale were both rained off.

On Saturday, October 7, the indoor club are holding an open day from 10.30am until 1pm when all are welcome to try out the game.

All necessary equipment will be supplied but flat shoes must be worn.
