MATT Walker lifted the Dorset Amateur Mens Championship trophy on Sunday after winning a tightly-contested final against Matt Sandy at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club.

After qualifying from the strokeplay event on Friday, Walker won three matchplay battles over the course of the fiercely contested weekend as he beat Tom Peacock (4&3), on Saturday, Bradley Cox and Sandy on his way to glory.

The golfer, who has become green keeper at Came Down Golf Club, was ecstatic about his victory.

He said: “Friday’s Stroke Play was difficult because there were some very challenging pin positions.

"The course is superb and has been all weekend.”

When asked about the rough, he added: “It's true it’s very tough but if you’re in it it’s your fault you shouldn’t be there!

"The course rewards good play and punishes bad play.”

One of the highlights of Walker's play was a superb eagle on the par five 15th on Friday.
