TREVOR Senior has given a warm tribute to former club Bridport, insisting “there has always been a great spirit” at the club.

The former Bees’ boss, who had initially earmarked his resignation from the managerial hot seat at St Mary’s Field for the end of the season, decided to step down immediately by mutual consent after a chat with chairman Adrian Scadding on Sunday morning.

But, after insisting “I’m not leaving on bad terms” the former Dorchester Town, Reading and Middlesbrough striker, reflected on some fond memories during his managerial spells with the Bees.

“I enjoyed my years there and had some great times and some good memories,” he told Echosport.

“Obviously we got up from Division One up to the (Western) Premier League. We got to the semi-final of the Les Phillips Cup one year and had some good cup runs and exciting games.

“I worked with some great players and there has always been a great spirit at Bridport. I will miss that side of it but the time was right I think.”

Asked whether he still felt it was the right move to announce his initial departure date before the end of the campaign, Senior said: “Definitely.

“I was talking to the Brislington manager after the game on Saturday because I have known Jeff Meacham a long time.

“He was having the same problems with unavailability and it grinds you down after a while.

“It’s easy for people to comment on how the team is going but, since Christmas really, I haven’t had a chance to enjoy the game.

“I tended to be worrying more about stuff off the field, with regards to upsetting people by leaving them out, which is all part of management, but you need to concentrate on what’s happening on the field.

“I’m not leaving on bad terms, it’s just a case of (the club) going through the motions it seems, to see the remaining nine games out. Maybe it just needs a freshen up.”

On his own future in the game, Senior added: “I am not sure what I am going to do at the moment.

“I won’t say I will never be a manager again but, the way I feel at the moment, I need a bit of a break.”

Chairman Scadding confirmed to Echosport that Senior’s assistant Mark Carter, with player-coach Ryan Dovell, will manage Bridport over the next two games, starting with tomorrow's clash against Bradford Town at St Mary’s Field (7.45pm).

The Bees have it all to do to turn their form around, having lost nine out of their last 10 games.
